First Post
Since deciding to pursue actuarial science and pursue an actuarial credential, nearly every single person in my life asks me what actuaries do. Depending on the mood I might just say that actuaries do "insurance" or "risk management" or if I feel someone is genuinely interested and wants a deeper explanation, then I get into a little bit more. As hard as I try to explain or for them to understand, it doesn't always click. Even if it did click, I think a good understanding takes exposure to the types of problems that actuaries work on.1
So the bulk of this blog is for me to practice communicating about problems that actuaries work on, mostly the problems I'm grappling with. Some of these posts will be for a more technical audience and some will be more casual. If I know something takes background knowledge to understand the post, I'll try to let you know at the top of that post.
This is a form of productive fun for me. Though the main focus will be actuarial content; sometimes it will discuss literature, exercise science, birding, urbanism, backpacking, sports, pedagogy, or whatever else I've been thinking about lately. I hope you enjoy and thanks for stopping by.
A more or less complete understanding requires working and solving the problems themselves. Alas, there is never a substitute for practice.↩
